U-Dig Dahlia Clump Sale 2025 | Saturday, November 22nd, 10am-12pm

Sunset View Farm | 27 Pierce Road, Lafayette NJ 07848
Ticket includes the cost of your first clump.

Each additional clump is $20.

Join us for an incredible deal on top-quality dahlia tubers! We have over 700 plants in dozens of varieties which we are opening to the public for you to dig up and take home entire clumps of dahlias.

Pre-registration by your party head is required to make sure we don't have too many people in the field!

Here's how it works:

$20 PER CLUMP (3-25 TUBERS).

You'll be lifting your own dahlia clumps, which can have anywhere from 3 to 25 viable tubers per clump. The average is closer to 5 or 6 after digging, washing, and dividing by a careful hand.

Your ticket pays for your first clump. Each additional is $20.

CASH OR VENMO

We can process cards, but must do so manually. In the interest of speedy checkout, please bring cash or Venmo.

SALES TAX APPLIES

Legally mandated NJ sales tax of 6.625% applies to all purchases

GATES OPEN AT 10AM

Everyone will get a link to the field map beforehand so you can find what you're looking for with your phone. At 10am we will have a demonstration of good harvesting technique, then we will open the gates!

Your ticket purchase includes your first clump. You're welcome to dig as many more as you like, and we'll count your harvest at the exit gate.

PLEASE TAKE WHAT YOU DIG

To be fair to everyone, be careful not to damage anything unnecessarily. Choose wisely, and take what you dig up.

Don't worry - we won't let you go home with any small clumps if you get unlucky - we'll make sure you get good stuff!

FLAGGING TAPE PROVIDED FOR LABELING

We'll provide flagging tape and permanent markers so you can label the clumps you've harvested. However, you're welcome to bring your own labeling and transport system if you prefer.

BRING YOUR OWN TRANSPORT SYSTEM

You will need a container to transport your clumps home in. Large, wide and sturdy storage tubs or totes are usually the best option.

We don't recommend bags, since carrying clumps in bags will break many of your tubers.

BRING YOUR OWN DIGGING TOOL

A potato fork is best, but a shovel will work just fine. Make sure your tools are clearly labeled with your name!

BRING YOUR OWN SNIPS OR LOPPERS

You'll need to cut the stalks off the plants you choose, so bring sturdy loppers or snips. Make sure your tools are clearly labeled with your name!

ALL TOOLS MUST BE SANITIZED ON SITE

To keep diseases out of our fields, we will require everyone to sanitize your tools in a bleach solution prior to beginning your harvest.

DRESS FOR THE WEATHER

This event will be held rain, snow or shine. Please dress appropriately. We recommend rubber boots you can hose off before leaving in case the fields are muddy.

NO PETS PLEASE

We love dogs and other pets, but please leave them at home.

KIDS AND FAMILIES WELCOME

There's no price for entry - only for the clumps you take home with you. Bring whomever you like!

------ FAQ & Other Things of Note-------

What's your guarantee on these tubers?

Because we are not involved in the harvest, processing, transport, or storage of any of these dahlias, we cannot guarantee their success next season! This is a fantastic opportunity to get high quality stock at a very low price, but you will be assuming the risk yourself.

There is a very (very) small chance of mislabels in this field. We go through every single plant while the field is flowering, stake anything that does not belong in a particular section, and dig up that plant before the general harvest.

However, it's possible one did not flower in time. We cannot replace any mislabeled tubers. The risk is very low, but you must still dig at your own risk!

Why aren't we harvesting these clumps ourselves?

We'll have thousands of the flowers produced by these plants, but we have no plans to sell the tubers through our regular means, as mail-ordered, individually divided tubers. We use this field mainly to produce clumps to pay our Work Trade participants.

Where did these tubers come from?

This field was planted with our "seconds" stock from last year - 100% home-grown. No imports. "Seconds" quality tubers are healthy tubers we wouldn't send to a customer because of a cosmetic defect, but which still grow exactly the same plant as a "pretty" tuber. Which you can see from how healthy the field is!

Some of the field may already be dug up

The other purpose of this field is to test tractor-assisted planting and harvesting methods. We may have already "lifted" some of the rows with Farmer Andy's antique Farmall M as an experiment. All this means is less digging for you!

November is late! What if the tubers freeze?

Dahlias die off above the ground after the first killing frost each year, but in our climate, the tubers are usually ok for up to another month. Our tubers are planted 3-6" deep and will be hilled, too, so they'll be snug until harvest.

How will I store these dahlia tubers over the winter?

If you've never stored dahlia tubers before and you want the best chance to protecting your investment in your garden, we encourage you to check out our online course on dahlia tuber storage, available to watch now at this link.
