Our winter masterclass is a comprehensive introductory course on business design and management, tailored specifically to dahlia growers preparing to earn $10,000 to $100,000 with any combination of retail and B2B cut flower sales, tuber and cuttings sales, agritourism, photography, or education.
 
Dahlia growers who are planning to begin a new business or expand your current hobby business, while juggling other life commitments like another job or family, will find this class especially helpful.
 
There are two components to this class: an online course which will be released in December 2026, followed by a three hour live Q&A with Dan, co-owner of Sunset View Farm Dahlias, in January 2027.

WHAT TO EXPECT
This is a fun, challenging, and practical small business course. In designing the material, we've assumed a few things about you:
 
You'll be planting at least 500 dahlias in spring 2027
You already have or want to begin a dahlia business
You have a revenue goal in mind for 2027
You're looking for help designing, organizing, and executing a plan to hit that goal
 
COURSE CONTENT
In less than 8 hours of jam-packed, engaging videos, you'll gain years of business experience, including:
 
An overview of the most common and profitable business units for dahlia growers
Creating a budget for your time
How to set realistic revenue goals
Process analysis
Timekeeping and documentation during the season
Creating a filing system that makes sense to other people
Website setup and management
Creating a sales and marketing plan with a schedule and a budget
Designing a farm schedule one year in advance
Basic business accounting, including expenses, project tracking, and your profit & loss statement
Acquiring affordable and profitable stock (new dahlias) for your farm
Designing processes with helpers in mind
Hiring and managing your first employee

You’ll leave with lots of practical, actionable homework for designing or redesigning your own venture this winter, and tools to run a more peaceful, joyful, and profitable business going forward.
 
3 HOUR LIVE Q&A
All participants will be able to submit questions in advance about the course content for Dan to answer at one of three live virtual Q&A sessions.
 
Attendees will be limited to make sure everyone has a chance to participate, but remember -- much of the value of this experience is in listening to the answers to everyone else's questions, too. We will prioritize questions about any topics that might not have been directly addressed in the course, so do your homework!

NETWORK WITH OTHER DAHLIAPRENEURS
We'll include an optional contact sheet of other attendees, where you can submit a photo, a brief introduction, and your preferred contact method, which will be shared with other participants so you can build community and ask each other questions as you continue to grow your businesses.
 
YOUR INSTRUCTORS
Dan Grinthal, co-owner and the farm's business manager, will be your main instructor. Dan grew up with dahlias on the family farm and has been a professional dahlia farmer for 5 years.

After earning a degree in Product Design, he helped transition Andy and Linda's hobby farm into a full-time venture. Our farm now cultivates 10,000 plants a year with the help of a small crew of employees, and serves thousands of customers with several profitable business units, both locally and across the US.
 
Other members of the Sunset View Farm Dahlias family and crew will help teach portions of the course, since a big part of the success of Sunset View Farm Dahlias comes from the different skills our whole family brings to the operation.
 
Andy is a mechanical engineer and software designer. Linda is a retired sales and marketing executive. Before starting medical school in 2025, Emma (Dan's wife) helped launch several new business units and was instrumental in analyzing and streamlining the entire farm's processes, which enabled us to hire and manage some absolutely awesome employees -- first and foremost, Casey, our farm manager, who has continued to improve all aspects of our business.
